I blatantly stole THIS (https://7daystodie.com/forums/showthread.php?41237-Developer-Diary-Alpha-15!!!&p=476141&viewfull=1#post476141)guy's train prefab (thanks Horst for sending it to me!) and am making a train depot. This will show the WIP and I will update as I go.

Just started, so be gentle.

From one of my early tries with this: If you ad a parallel second track, you could simply have it end like that:

...And I think everyone will be childish enough to jump into the locomotive to enjoy the view of the tracks ahead, so maybe the locomotive should face the other way...leaving the depot

What version did you make it on? Either some block ids changed or the editor I'm using did something; I've got to swap out some of them.

Im pretty sure I saw a crane prefab somewhere that looked good... I'm going to steal it, too. :)

I plan to make it an "end of the line" station.

After this, I want to make a section that's in the middle of nowhere, but was attacked, and it'll look like it was, too. :)

Made it on 14.7 .... well I had an explosion at the end of the train while I tried to put cars on it in creative ... so maybe some scrap iron blocks collided with the rest of the train...

Did not think anyone would want to use it so I might not have done the best repair job^^

Were you using concrete pillars in the tracks?

Horst

You should consider adapting it to fit into the snow biome.

- You could cover the tracks, giving some sense to their disappearing
- you could cover the wheels a bit....for obvious reasons
- it would fit nicely near the logging camp or whatever the place with loads of wood logs in navezgane is...which is also in the snow

Were you using concrete pillars in the tracks?

No, I used the wedges...not symetrical, but have a credible width. One full block is too wide, half a block doesn't work at all with the destroyed stone...

I am going to see if those rounded metal pieces will help, and try to find some accents to break up the colors a bit, too.

Ill be playing with density values too, which will help get the terrain to meet the blocks better.

Horst

Can you simply get the destroyed stone lower towards 3/4 or even 1/2 height?

Snow could still solve a lot of issues^^

I do like the cave collapse idea; if the train is sticking like halfway out, that could be cool.

Custom blocks are doable, but then I'd be dealing with a custom xml and I shy away from that when prefabbing.

Playing around with Densities (great stuff!), made the wooden portion of the tracks fit in better (replaced the concrete wedges).

pretty amazing man

very nice work
perhaps someone is making a Nav-map with railtracks in it ;)

The depot is already made ! :)

He had it come in to diersville between the corn fields, looked pretty tight.

Ill make it rwg friendly eventually.

I see you are remodelling the locomotive with the rounded 90 corners on the roof and the bonnet. I was originally modelling on something like this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_SD38 because it seems to consist mainly of 90 and 45 angles (ie. roof).

If you tell me on what train you are now reworking it, I could also try my hands on the type of locomotive you prefer.

PS.: In madmoles Video I have seen that the new destroyed stone texture in A15 contains bright red bricks...guess we should start making the tracks with gravel...

A15 will definitely mean changes, but usually for the better. Should be out before the prefab is finished.

I think I found another nice location. Currently trying some things there...
- logging camp (1600;1600 Navezgane)
- flat ground
- snow to cover the wheels
-close to radiation zone
- credible reason to have a train
- need about 200 blocks of track to end it inside a collapsed tunnel (pointing toward rad.zone)

Definitely a good place. Lemme know if you need help exporting it. :)

Also, you'll want to start using imgur.com or some other photo hosting site; attaching your photo's to the forums will cause you problems (you'll quickly run out of space).

Maybe I should consider that^^

Still room for one more:

I'm slowly getting better with building these things...have to admit this is really scratching the limitations of the game, as trains turn out to be rather tiny if you are limited to one part per m ^^

...maybe this one will fit your depot as well once its finished...when I'm done I'll send it to you, and take a second look at the one you are using atm.

Looks really good Guppy, you using the tool to do those density changes?

Guppycur

No, the editor. Sticking with hals until you and herphol unlock all the secrets.

Horst, a new engine would work, so I can have it being "repaired" next to the other one, make it more obvious what the buildings function is...

But you're well on your way to prefabbing, and as much as I appreciate the use of your trains, it wouldn't bother me if you wanted to make your own... I mean they're yours, and you deserve the experience and recognition. :) I'll be happy to answer any questions on using the tools. Add me on steam if you haven't already, id is... Wait for it... Guppycur.

You're way more artistic than I am.

But, I'm happy to continue stealing from you, too. :)

As you help me with technical stuff, or hand it on to others you can use everything I make^^

As you can see I am building in the location I mentioned before. I don't know, how I can save all that in a map which others can play, and I have no idea how I can cut pieces of my map out and put them into rwg. So in the hope for help in these areas I gladly let you use what I build.

And more than anything I really think a railway fits the games scenario perfectly. Broken, useless trains create an atmosphere of a bygone age, downfall of society and apokalypse in general. Therefor it would be nice if it became more popular, so TFP notice or get requests... One more reason to say yes, use it, steal it, use it to build cool things! :D

Cool beans. You build, I turn to prefab, we release. :)

Rwg has a size limit for spawns, don't recall exactly what, but I'm sure someone will chime in.

Send me the save files for whatever you build and the coordinates and I'll rip them to prefab.

This is just the shell, I'll be touching it up to remove the minecraft look; just a first pass to get the general shape. :)

Well, back to the drawing board on the loading crane... added a light bulb and the entire thing fell apart. Lol!

But, I know better how I'm going to handle it though... too bad I have a lot of work coming up, this project is going to have to stall for a bit. :)

A standard container should be 12m / blocks long. Afaik the ones on the train are even bigger. If you don't want the crane directly next to it, stability might always be a problem.

You could maybe try something similar to the cranes which are used in harbours and lift containers from both ends. Or go for an apocalyptic design, where it has already collapsed.

Check the first post, I had replaced this with the ship port kind. :)
